How My Recordings Are Made
Understanding the complexity of the process used to produce my recordings will eliminate any doubts about their quality.
This process is used to make both the custom and general recordings.
- Tailored composition. The script is composed from techniques that have proven themselves over years, with components selected to optimize results for the specific individual. Different personalities respond better to certain techniques, the best techniques to use are chosen after interacting with you to understand your personality and desires. ~2-4 hours.
- Digital recording. The session is recorded digitally, at a CD-quality sampling rate (44.1 KHz). ~1 hour.
- Noise cancellation. A computer samples the ambient and electronic noise present during the recording session and digitally removes it from the recorded session. ~1/2 hour.
- Digital editing. I digitally edit the session to reduce imperfections. ~4-6 hours.
+ Breaths and any other extraneous noises are removed.
+ All inter-word gaps are clipped to absolute silence.
+ Any imperfect passages are re-recorded.
+ Passages are normalized as needed to maintain a consistent energy level.
- Reverberation. A gentle reverberation is digitally added to my voice to add an ethereal aspect to its relaxing nature. ~1/2 hour.
- Mixing background tracks. Background tracks are mixed in, as desired. Generally a gentle surf, sometimes music. The music is generated digitally (MIDI). ~1 hour.
- Digital production. A CD is made directly from the digital composition, with no analog steps. Cassettes are recorded on a state-of-the-art Nakamichi RX-505 deck using high-quality type II TDK SA-X tape and Dolby B noise reduction. Options available upon request: type IV tape, Maxell UD-XL-II tape, and Dolby C. ~1 hour.
When you add in the time that it takes to interact with you and understand your personality and desires, it ends up being a process that takes 10-14 hours. The end result, though, is a recording that you can use time and time again without paying for multiple personal visits.

Side A: Session with Surf & New Age music.
Side B: Session with no music (for when you prefer to use your own music). |
When only one track will fit on the CD, it will have the calming, relaxing sound of ocean waves as a background.
When two tracks will fit: one track has ocean waves and music, the other has no background (for when you prefer to use your own music).
Many sessions are more than 40 minutes long, hence two copies will not fit on an 80-minute CD. |
