Self Esteem For Living The Dream

Confidence is sometimes a touchy subject, as many feel they have a healthy amount of it when the fact is they might not.
In my practice, I’ve found that often it’s the females that have the lowest self-esteem, as society has conditioned them into having unreasonable expectations. Magazines, beauty products, and media in general imply that there is a certain type that is ‘most attractive’ and any other type needs to become more that way. Males also sometimes have really low self-esteem, but usually for reasons that stem from conceptions of manliness and decades of suppressed emotions.

self esteem needs improving

Most people, in some form or another, could benefit from working on their feelings of self-worth.
Here are a few tips to help you improve your self-confidence:
1) Stand and sit straighter!
Hours of working on mobile devices or sitting incorrectly cause us to slouch. Slouching is a habit that is sometimes built over many years, and it can be hard to break. The truth is that it’s extremely unhealthy! It compresses the lungs and heart and causes the internal organs to not function at optimal performance. Make a conscious effort to straighten your back while standing AND sitting! If you work on it consistently, you should notice a change in your auto-pilot within a week or two.

2) Never apologize as a preamble.
Refrain from saying you’re sorry before saying something (unless it’s a genuine apology). Apologizing at the beginning of your sentences causes others to already (unconsciously) perceive your statements as lower on the totem pole. Instead, find other ways to express your desire to not bother people when you say things. It’s perfectly fine to say “excuse me” or “pardon me” to get someone’s attention, and there’s no need to apologize when you’ve done NOTHING wrong!

3) Never begin your questions with “this might be stupid…”
When you yourself call your statements dumb, it sends a very conscious message to the listener. If you need to ask a question or get something clarified, it’s perfectly respectable to do so, especially in a work environment. Generally speaking (unless people have had to repeat the same things multiple times) it’s looked upon as a positive thing for you to make sure you know exactly how to handle a situation.
